On the Maytag top-load models covered by the manufacturer’s guidance, Ld means “long drain”: the washer is not removing water within the expected time. The first checks belong outside the cabinet. Drain-hose installation, a kink, a blockage, or a restricted household standpipe can all slow the path enough to trigger the display.
Read the display carefully
Ld is not the same as LdU. Ld concerns drainage; LdU concerns a lid that cannot unlock. It is also different from Int, a front-load cancellation state that may keep draining for a controlled period. Record the capitalization and every character before acting.
This article is limited to Maytag top-load washers that document Ld. A different appliance or control family may assign another meaning, so compare the model number with the owner’s manual.
Inspect the full external drain route
- Pause the washer and wait for the basket to stop. If water is near the rim or leaking, shut off power and the supply valves.
- Look behind the washer without crushing the hose further. Straighten only a gentle, accessible kink.
- Check how far the hose enters the standpipe. Excessive insertion can restrict flow or create siphoning behavior.
- Compare the standpipe height and hose installation with the model’s installation instructions. Do not guess a universal height.
- Check the visible hose end and household drain for lint or an obvious obstruction. Do not push a tool deep into plumbing while the washer is connected to power.
What the remaining water tells you
A full basket points to little or no drainage. A small pool after a long attempt can indicate partial restriction. A washer that drains into a utility sink offers a useful observation: note whether the stream begins strongly and then weakens, or stays weak from the start. Do not detach a full hose unless you can safely control hot, dirty water.
If the household standpipe backs up, the plumbing needs attention even if the washer pump is operating. If the hose and drain are clear but little water moves, the filter, pump, wiring, or control may require service.
Stop before an internal pump test
Do not reach through an access opening, energize a pump outside its housing, or probe wiring. Disconnect power and arrange service when Ld returns after the documented external checks, when the pump only hums, or when water cannot be removed without opening the machine.
Avoid confusing a drain restriction with siphoning
A slow drain and siphoning can both leave the cycle behaving strangely, but the hose clues differ. A restricted path may leave water in the basket because it cannot leave fast enough. A hose installed too deeply or without the required air gap may let water move when the control is not intentionally pumping it. Preserve the installation described for the exact model rather than sealing the hose into the standpipe.
If the household drain backs up, address that plumbing condition before repeating a washer cycle. If the external route is correct and accessible debris is not present, the remaining pump, wiring, and control checks belong to qualified service.
