A turbidity sensor evaluates how cloudy the wash or rinse water is on washer designs that include this feature. The reading can help the control judge suspended soil or detergent and decide whether the programmed cycle needs an adjustment. Not every washer uses the sensor, and not every model responds to it in the same way.
What turbidity means
Turbidity is reduced light transmission caused by particles or bubbles in water. A sensor may use an emitter and receiver across a small water path. Soil, lint, detergent residue, bubbles, or a contaminated optical surface can affect the signal; the control interprets that signal using model-specific software.
Why the cycle might change
On a supported washer, soil feedback may contribute to rinse or time decisions. A longer cycle does not by itself prove a turbidity-sensor failure, because load size, imbalance, foam, fill speed, temperature, and selected options can also add time.
Bosch documents E25/F25 as a turbidity-sensor issue on covered washers. LG documents tS/t5 for a turbidity-sensor connection or sensing problem on certain front-load models. Those labels are manufacturer examples, not interchangeable codes.
Useful checks stay outside the sensor
- Use the correct HE detergent amount and avoid mixing incompatible products.
- Run the maintenance cycle specified for the model if residue is visible.
- Record whether the alert followed freezing conditions, heavy foam, or a particular load.
- Check whether draining and rinsing complete normally.
Do not pour a strong chemical into the washer to โclean the sensor.โ Follow only the approved drum and dispenser care instructions.
Why the component is not a casual DIY test
The sensor and its water path are normally internal. Access can release retained water and expose wiring, and a resistance or optical test requires model specifications. Do not run the washer with a sensor removed, probe it while energized, or assume replacement will fix every long-cycle complaint. Repeated sensor-specific codes belong to qualified service.
What optical soil sensing can and cannot tell the washer
A turbidity sensor on an equipped washer evaluates how light passes through wash or rinse water. The control may use that information when deciding whether soil or detergent remains, but the exact cycle response varies by platform. It is not a camera, and it does not identify a particular stain or fabric.
Excess detergent, residue in the water path, or unusually dirty water can influence an optical reading without proving an electronic failure. Follow detergent instructions and user-cleanable maintenance guidance first. A brand-specific fault such as Bosch E25/F25 should still be interpreted with that manufacturerโs documentation; do not transfer its meaning to another brand that happens to use a turbidity sensor.
