When a Whirlpool top-load washer adds water while water is also leaving, check the drain-hose installation for siphoning before assuming the pump is stuck on. Whirlpoolโs guidance points to hose insertion, standpipe height, and the air gap around the hose as the key external checks.
How siphoning creates the loop
The washer is designed to hold water until a drain portion of the cycle. If the drain hose is sealed tightly in the standpipe, pushed too far down, or installed outside the modelโs height range, gravity can pull water out while the inlet valves keep replacing it. The result looks like a continuous fill-and-drain cycle even though the control is still asking for a normal fill.
This is different from a washer that intentionally drains for several minutes after a canceled cycle or a detected no-water condition. Record whether the behavior begins immediately during filling and whether the display shows a code.
Four installation details to compare with the manual
- Standpipe height: Measure from the floor and use the range in the installation instructions for the exact model.
- Insertion depth: The hose end must not be buried too far down the standpipe.
- Air gap: Do not tape or seal the hose airtight to the drain pipe.
- Routing: Remove accessible kinks and confirm the washer is not crushing the hose against the wall.
Keep the manufacturerโs hose retainer in place. Do not shorten a hose, add an improvised extension, or force a larger hose into the standpipe.
A controlled observation
Turn the washer off, disconnect power, and correct only visible installation issues. Restore power and run a short cycle with the standpipe area visible. The water level should rise during filling without a continuous stream into the drain. Stop immediately if the standpipe backs up or a connection leaks.
If the washer continues draining with the hose installed correctly, the behavior may involve a control command, valve, pump circuit, or a model-specific protection routine. That is no longer a hose-only diagnosis.
Do not defeat the drain system
Never cap the drain hose to make the washer hold water, and do not clamp it shut during operation. The washer must be able to remove water safely. Repeated simultaneous filling and draining after a verified installation calls for Whirlpool support or qualified service.
Use timing to identify the likely path
Watch when water disappears. If it begins leaving as soon as the level reaches the drain-hose outlet and the pump does not sound active, installation-related siphoning is a strong clue. If the pump is audibly running when it should not, or the washer reports a code, the problem may be a controlled drain response rather than passive siphoning.
Do not pull the drain hose out while the washer is full and running; uncontrolled water can flood the room. Pause the cycle, shut off power if necessary, and contain any water before changing an accessible hose position. A correct standpipe setup must still follow the model installation guide and local plumbing requirements.
