Maytag Top-Load Washer OFb Code: Correcting an Off-Balance Load

OFb on a supported Maytag top-load washer means the load is off balance and the washer could not correct it automatically. The machine now needs the user to redistribute the items around the wash plate.

Pause and Redistribute

Wait for the basket to stop, open the lid, and untangle the load. Place items in loose, even heaps around the basket rather than packing them on one side. Close the lid and press Start/Pause as the model directs.

Load Patterns That Trigger OFb

  • A single absorbent item, such as a bath mat or heavy jacket
  • Sheets wrapped around smaller garments
  • Too few items to counterbalance one heavy piece
  • Waterproof or bulky items placed on an unsuitable cycle

Do not add buckets of water to balance the machine. Maytag warns that extra water can make the load more unstable.

OFb Versus F0 E3

OFb identifies load distribution. F0 E3 identifies an overload condition on supported Maytag models. A load can be off balance without exceeding capacity, and an evenly distributed load can still be too heavy. The display determines which correction comes first.

Check the Washer If Every Load Goes Off Balance

Confirm the cabinet stands level and all feet contact the floor. Remove shipping materials if the installation instructions show any still present. If OFb recurs with ordinary mixed loads and correct loading, suspension or sensing may need service. Do not remove springs, rods, or the cabinet to test them.

Write down the fabric mix and approximate load size when OFb repeats. A pattern limited to one bulky item suggests loading behavior, while repeated events across balanced mixed loads give Maytag support a different diagnostic starting point.
