rL or F34 on supported Whirlpool front-load washers means the control detected items in the drum during the Clean Washer cycle. Clean Washer is a maintenance program intended to run with the drum empty.
What to Do
- Cancel the maintenance cycle and wait for the door to unlock safely.
- Remove clothing, cleaning cloths, loose objects, and any item stored in the drum.
- Check the door gasket for a small garment or object that may be detected as a load.
- Use only the washer-cleaning product and amount approved in the model manual.
- Restart Clean Washer with no laundry present.
Why a Small Item Matters
The maintenance routine uses a programmed water and motion pattern. Laundry changes that load and can prevent the cycle from operating as intended. A sock caught at the gasket can be easy to overlook even when the main drum appears empty.
rL/F34 Is Not an Overload Code
The message is tied to items detected during Clean Washer. It does not mean an ordinary wash load is unbalanced or too heavy. Do not create a smaller wash load and run Clean Washer with it; the correct load size is zero.
If the Empty Drum Still Triggers the Code
Confirm the selected program is actually Clean Washer and that no removable accessory has been left inside. If rL/F34 returns in a genuinely empty drum, stop repeating the cycle and contact Whirlpool. Load detection or control diagnosis is beyond a safe external check.
Note whether the code appears immediately or only after the drum begins moving. Timing does not prove a component failure, but it gives support a more precise description than the code alone.
