LG documents E3 on supported top-load washers as a drain-motor operating error. The code can also appear when water inside the washer has frozen. It is more specific than a general complaint that the tub is slow to empty, so confirm that the display is E3 and verify the exact model before troubleshooting.
E3 Compared With OE
LG commonly uses OE for a drainage problem caused by an outlet hose, installation, or restricted drain path. E3 points to the operation of the drain motor on the top-load models covered by LGโs current list. A blocked hose can still affect draining, but E3 should not automatically be relabeled as OE or treated as proof that the pump motor must be replaced.
Check the Operating Context
If the laundry room has been below freezing, do not repeatedly start the washer. Frozen water can prevent normal drain operation and may damage hoses or the pump. Let the appliance and plumbing return to a safe room temperature using the model-approved thawing guidance. Do not use boiling water, an open flame, or a heat gun.
When freezing is not plausible, look only for external conditions: a sharply kinked drain hose, a crushed section behind the washer, or a household drain that is visibly backing up. Keep hands away from standing water until power is disconnected and the floor is dry.
One Controlled Restart
LGโs top-load guidance allows turning the washer off, disconnecting power, reconnecting it, and trying operation again. Treat this as a power cycle. It may clear a temporary control state; it cannot free an internal motor or repair a damaged drain component. Record whether the machine hums, drains any water, or immediately returns to E3.
When the Pump Area Is a Service Job
Do not tip the washer, remove the cabinet, or energize the drain motor for testing. If E3 repeats, the tub remains full, or the washer produces an unusual electrical smell or harsh pump noise, leave it off and arrange service. A technician can distinguish a motor problem from wiring, control, or an internal obstruction without exposing the user to live parts or retained water.
