On supported Maytag front-load washers, CL is a Clean Washer reminder. Maytag says it appears after 30 wash cycles to prompt a maintenance cycle. It is not the same as LOC, which indicates that the controls are locked.
What makes the reminder clear
The direct response is to run the washer’s Clean Washer cycle with the drum empty, following the product and model instructions. Maytag also states that the CL reminder will clear after three additional regular cycles even if Clean Washer is not run. That automatic clearing does not mean residue has been removed; it only describes the reminder logic.
Do not add laundry to a maintenance cycle. Check the owner’s manual before adding a washer-cleaning product, because allowed products and dispenser locations can vary. Never combine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or another cleaner.
CL, LOC, and rL/F34 are different

Because similar letters have different meanings across brands, do not use an LG, Samsung, or Bosch button sequence on a Maytag washer.

- Remove every item, then rotate the empty drum by hand only while the machine is off.
- Inspect the door seal for a loose item, residue, or standing water without pulling the seal out of place.
- Wipe accessible moisture after the cycle and allow the drum and dispenser to air dry when the manual permits.
- If odor remains, review detergent dosage and whether repeated cold, short cycles are leaving residue.
When CL points to a control problem
A normal CL reminder should follow the behavior in the model manual. If the washer cannot start Clean Washer with an empty drum, the display changes to another code, or the controls remain unresponsive after CL clears, document the new symptom. Do not bypass the door lock or enter an undocumented diagnostic mode.
Why the washer can still operate normally
The CL reminder is based on use, not on a sensor proving that the tub is dirty. A washer can complete ordinary loads and still show the reminder because the supported control has reached its Clean Washer prompt. That is why changing door-lock settings or repeatedly interrupting power does not address the underlying maintenance message.
Run the named maintenance program only as the manual directs and leave clothing out of the drum. Do not mix cleaning products or substitute an undocumented chemical combination. If CL remains after the documented cycle, verify the exact display in the model manual before assuming a control fault.
