F0 E4 on the Whirlpool top-load washers covered by the manufacturer means the sensed wash-water temperature is too hot. Whirlpool’s first check is the water-supply installation: the hot and cold hoses may be connected to the wrong inlets.
Trace each hose end to end
- Turn the washer off and close both household water valves.
- Allow hot water and fittings to cool before touching them.
- Trace the hot valve to the inlet marked Hot and the cold valve to Cold.
- Correct a reversed connection using the installation instructions.
- Open the valves slowly and inspect every fitting for leakage.
Do not rely only on hose color. Follow the actual plumbing connection, because replacement hoses may not use standard colors.
F0 E4 versus neighboring displays
F0 E4 concerns temperature. Whirlpool F0 E5 concerns an off-balance load on supported top-load machines, while Samsung 4C2/4E2 can also indicate reversed supplies but belongs to a different manufacturer and control system. Similar corrective themes do not make the codes interchangeable.
Documented control restart
After verifying the hoses, Whirlpool documents disconnecting the washer from power for five minutes and then reconnecting it. That step restarts the control. It does not repair a temperature sensor, inlet valve, or wiring problem. Run a normal test only after the connections are dry and leak-free.
When the hoses are already correct
If F0 E4 returns with hot connected to Hot and cold connected to Cold, stop repeating cycles. Record the selected temperature and whether very hot water enters on a cold setting. Internal valve, sensor, and control diagnosis requires service. Do not probe the temperature circuit or operate the washer with panels removed.
Confirm hose identity from end to end
Do not rely only on handle color at the wall. Trace each accessible hose from its supply valve to the labeled washer inlet, because hoses can cross behind the appliance. With power off and the valves closed, correct only an installation that can be reached safely and follow the model installation instructions.
After the connections are correct, choose a setting that lets the control evaluate normal water temperature as directed by Whirlpool. If F0 E4 returns with verified hose routing, the internal temperature-sensing and control checks belong to service. Do not test a thermistor or wiring on an energized washer.
