LdU means a supported Whirlpool top-load washer cannot unlock its lid. Whirlpool’s specific first check is easy to miss: the washer may detect an object, such as a laundry basket, pressing down on the lid.
Remove Weight From the Lid
Take detergent bottles, folded clothing, baskets, and any other object off the washer. Do not pull upward on the lid while the lock is trying to release. Give the basket time to stop and the control time to complete any drain or safety delay.
Why the Lid May Stay Locked Briefly
A top-load washer keeps the lid secured while the basket is spinning or conditions are unsafe. A short delay is normal. LdU appears when the expected unlock cannot occur. If the washer still contains water, do not tip it or force the lid to reach the load.
Safe Next Steps
- Remove all weight from the lid.
- Press the model’s cancel or power control once.
- Wait for movement and draining to stop.
- If the control has finished but LdU remains, disconnect power for the interval in the owner’s manual.
A power cycle restarts the control only. It does not release a mechanically jammed lock. Never pry the lid, remove the top, or bypass the interlock.
When to Arrange Service
Request help if LdU returns with nothing on the lid, the lid is visibly misaligned, or the lock continues clicking after the basket has stopped. Tell the servicer whether water remains in the tub. That detail helps separate an unlock problem from a drain or spin condition.
