LdL on a supported Whirlpool top-load washer means the lid is not locking. Whirlpool points first to an item caught under the lid or detergent buildup around the lock mechanism.
Clear the Closing Path
Turn the washer off and wait for the basket to stop. Open the lid, redistribute anything piled against its edge, and check the visible strike and lock opening. Remove lint or dried detergent with a damp cloth, then dry the area. Close the lid without slamming it.
What to Look For
- A garment, cord, or tag trapped between the lid and cabinet
- Detergent residue around the lock opening

Whirlpool advises service if LdL appears again after visible obstructions and residue have been removed. Internal latch, actuator, wiring, and control checks require cabinet access. Leave the washer off if the lid cannot secure or the lock makes repeated harsh clicking sounds.
Before contacting support, photograph the lid position and note whether the basket was empty, filling, or beginning to spin when LdL appeared. Those observations can help a technician distinguish a closing obstruction from feedback that failed after the lock engaged.
