A washer temperature sensorโoften a thermistorโchanges its electrical response with temperature so the control can judge the water or heater condition. The control can use that information to manage heated cycles, protect fabrics, or stop when the reading is implausible.
The sensor does not heat the water
The inlet valves admit household hot and cold water, and some washers also use an internal heater. The temperature sensor reports conditions; it does not create heat. A cold cycle can therefore result from supply setup, selected options, heater behavior, or sensingโnot automatically a failed thermistor.
Codes are manufacturer and model specific
LG documents tE as a temperature-sensor error on supported top-load washers. Samsung can use tC or tE on covered models. Those examples show the component category, not a universal code dictionary. A similar display on another brand or appliance may mean something else.
Observations that help diagnosis
- The exact code and cycle selected.
- Whether hot and cold hoses are connected correctly and both valves are open.
- Whether the alert followed manually added very hot water or freezing conditions.
- Whether only heated cycles fail or every cycle stops.
- Whether the washer smells hot, leaks, or trips a breaker.
These observations separate external supply facts from internal electrical diagnosis.
What not to test live
A thermistor is usually connected to internal wiring near the tub, heater, or water path. Access can expose sharp metal and live circuits, and resistance specifications depend on both temperature and model. Do not probe a powered connector, pour hot water into the drum as an improvised calibration, or substitute a fixed resistor. Disconnect power and use qualified service for repeated temperature-sensor codes.
Temperature faults need more than a resistance guess
A thermistor changes an electrical property with temperature so the control can interpret water or component temperature. The normal value, connector arrangement, and location are model-specific. A resistance chart from another washer can therefore produce a false diagnosis even when the part has the same generic name.
External clues still matter: reversed hot and cold hoses, a closed valve, extremely hot household supply, or a selected cycle that intentionally heats water can change what the control sees. Record the exact code and when it appears. Internal resistance, wiring, heater, and control measurements require the service data and safe isolation procedures used by a qualified technician.
