A blinking Self Clean light on a Samsung washer is a maintenance reminder, not a fault code. Samsung says the reminder appears after a set number of washes—commonly 20 on a top-load model or 40 on a front-load model, with variation by washer.
Run the cycle with an empty tub
- Remove clothing and inspect the drum for loose objects.
- Select Self Clean, Self Clean+, or Pure Cycle, using the name shown on the model.
- Press Start and let the program complete.
- Wipe accessible moisture and leave the door or lid open to air dry when it is safe to do so.
Samsung’s general guidance says a cleaner is not required for the routine Self Clean cycle. Follow the model manual before adding bleach or another product. Never combine cleaning chemicals.
The displayed time can be much longer than a wash
Samsung notes that Self Clean takes roughly one hour on many top-load washers and about four hours on many front-load models. The time is used for a maintenance program that reaches areas a normal clothing cycle may not clean in the same way. Do not stop it simply because the timer is longer than expected.
If suds or residue remain
Suds during Self Clean suggest detergent or residue is still present. Samsung recommends another Self Clean cycle when residue remains in the tub. Review HE detergent dosage for future loads and clean the accessible dispenser areas described in the manual.
Persistent odor may also come from a door seal, drain filter, trapped item, or standing water. The reminder itself does not identify which of those conditions is present.
Reminder versus malfunction
A normal reminder should not prevent the washer from operating. If the program will not start with an empty drum, water will not enter or drain, a leak appears, or another code replaces the light, troubleshoot that new symptom. Do not use an undocumented diagnostic mode or open the cabinet to make the reminder disappear.
Treat the light as maintenance history, not a diagnosis
The reminder does not identify mold, a failed sensor, or a particular internal part. It tells the owner that the supported control is prompting a Self Clean or Pure Cycle maintenance run. Odor, visible residue, or drainage trouble may still need separate attention because the reminder alone does not diagnose those conditions.
Use an empty drum and follow the product guidance for the selected maintenance cycle. Do not place laundry in the washer or combine cleaners. If the light returns immediately after a correctly completed cycle, verify whether the model requires an acknowledgement step before treating it as abnormal.
