LdL on a supported Maytag top-load washer means the lid is not locking. Maytag identifies two useful external checks: an item caught directly under the lid and detergent buildup around the lid-lock mechanism.
Inspect Before Restarting
Stop the washer and wait for all basket movement to end. Open the lid, move the load away from the rim, and look for cords, fabric, or packaging between the lid and cabinet. Clean visible residue around the lock with a damp cloth, then dry it.
Do Not Defeat the Interlock
The lock is designed to keep the lid closed while the basket can spin. Never hold the lock down, tape the strike, or insert a tool to simulate a closed lid. A cycle that runs with the lid safety defeated can expose moving parts.
Check the Lid’s Fit
- The lid should sit level rather than rocking on one corner.
- The strike should be present and not visibly cracked.
- The hinge should allow the lid to close without sideways force.
- No basket, bottle, or laundry pile should press on the lid.
When to Stop
Close the lid normally and try the start command once. If LdL returns, the lock assembly or its electrical feedback needs diagnosis. Repeatedly slamming the lid can turn a small alignment problem into broken hardware. Arrange service when visible obstructions are absent or any lock part is damaged.
If the display appeared after moving the washer, also confirm that the cabinet is stable and the lid has not shifted against a nearby shelf. External pressure can change alignment even when the strike itself looks intact.
