A Lid or LId message on a GE top-load washer is model-dependent. GE documents one display context in which the cycle stopped because the lid is open. On certain 2017-and-newer Consumer Help Indicator controls, “Lid” can instead appear after three cycles were started without opening the lid.
Start with one complete open-close action
Wait for the basket to stop, open the lid fully, remove any clothing that crosses the rim or latch area, and close the lid normally. Then press Start as described in the model manual. On the three-cycle safeguard, that open-and-close action is the intended remedy.
If the message appeared mid-cycle, also check whether the lid was bumped open or never seated. Do not place weight on the lid to keep it closed.
Use the surrounding behavior to identify the context
- Cycle pauses immediately and LId scrolls: the control may be reporting an open lid.
- A new cycle will not start after several loads: the control may be asking for the lid to be opened between cycles.
- Lid Locked light remains on: wait for the basket to coast to a complete stop before expecting release.
- Message returns after a full open-close: inspect only the visible strike or magnet and request service if damaged.
Lid message versus lid-lock failure
A message caused by normal lid position can clear without a part replacement. A lid that will not align, a missing visible magnet or probe on a design that uses one, or a lock that never acknowledges closure is a different hardware clue. GE designs vary, so identify the feature from the owner’s manual before naming a failed part.
Do not defeat the safety circuit
Never hold a lid switch closed with a tool, add a loose magnet, or bypass the lock. The lid system prevents access during hazardous motion. Arrange service if the correct open-close action fails, the lid is physically damaged, or the washer runs with the lid state reported incorrectly.
Use the cycle history to interpret Lid
If Lid appears at the start and the lid is visibly open, closure is the first relevant action. If it appears after several completed cycles without the lid being opened, the supported control may be asking for a normal open-and-close event before another cycle. Those are different contexts even though the display text is similar.
Remove clothing caught at the strike and close the lid without force. Do not bypass the switch or hold it down with an object. If the message persists with an unobstructed lid, record whether the lid locks and whether the washer begins sensing; the remaining mechanism and circuit checks need service.
