Maytag LdU means a supported top-load washer cannot unlock the lid. The manufacturer notes that objects on top of the lid—such as a full laundry basket—can prevent the unlock action.
Remove the External Load
Clear everything from the washer top. Do not lift the lid against the lock. If the basket was spinning or the machine is draining, allow it to finish its safety delay. The lock may remain engaged until motion and water conditions are safe.
Observe Before Cycling Power
Listen for the basket slowing and the pump finishing. Note whether water remains visible. Use the model’s cancel or power control once, then wait. Cutting power immediately can preserve the condition that caused the lock to remain engaged.
Safe Limits
- Do not pry the lid.
- Do not remove the top panel to reach the lock.
- Do not tilt a washer that contains water.
- Do not bypass the lid switch to run a cycle.
If LdU Persists
After all motion has stopped and the top is clear, follow only the power-disconnect step in the model manual. A restart may clear a temporary control state, but it cannot release damaged hardware. Contact Maytag service if the code returns, the lock clicks repeatedly, or the lid is misaligned. Tell support whether the tub is full so the visit can account for safe draining.
Do not move the machine while the lid is locked. Shifting a water-filled washer can strain the hoses and floor, and it does not address the lock feedback that produced LdU.
Keep children away while access remains restricted.
