LG Top-Load Washer dL Code: When the Lid Will Not Lock

The dL code on supported LG top-load washers means the lid-locking mechanism is not functioning properly. It can appear even though the lid looks closed. LG highlights two homeowner-visible conditions: an object near the lock area and a very humid installation environment.

dL Is Not Simply โ€œThe Lid Is Openโ€

An open-lid or door-closure message asks whether the lid is shut. dL is narrower: the washer is not getting the lock result it expects. Clothing, detergent residue, or a small object at the lock can prevent engagement. A damaged lock or an internal electrical problem can produce the same display, so the code should not be used to order a part without diagnosis.

Inspect the Lock Area Without Bypassing It

  • Turn off the washer and wait for the basket to stop.
  • Open the lid and move clothing away from its edges.
  • Look at the visible lock opening and matching lid strike for lint, detergent buildup, or a loose item.
  • Wipe accessible residue with a damp cloth, then dry the area before closing the lid.
  • Close the lid normally. Do not slam it or hold the lock down with a tool.

Never insert an object into the lock to imitate a closed lid. The interlock keeps the lid secured while the basket can move at high speed. Bypassing it creates a serious injury risk.

Why Humidity Matters

LG also notes that continuous use in a humid room, such as an unventilated bathroom, can expose parts to moisture. Improve ventilation if the laundry area remains damp, but do not aim heat at the control or lock. A recurring dL display still needs inspection; drying the room is not proof that the lock is healthy.

Service Boundary

Request service if the lock or lid strike is visibly damaged, the lid cannot close squarely, or dL returns with the lock area clean and dry. The internal lock, wiring, and control checks require access behind panels. Leave the washer off until it can be assessed if the lid cannot secure reliably.
