A Samsung “Refill detergent” or “Refill softener” message means the corresponding auto-dispenser compartment is empty or needs product. It is a supply alert, not the SDC/5DC drawer-closure code and not proof that the dispenser pump has failed.
Fill the named compartment
- Pause or end the cycle as the model manual directs.
- Open the dispenser and identify the detergent and softener tanks by their labels.
- Add only the product type and concentration allowed for that tank.
- Stay below the maximum line and wipe product from the cap and sealing surfaces.
- Close the tank and drawer completely.
Do not put bleach into an auto-detergent tank, mix products, or dilute a concentrated detergent unless the manual explicitly calls for it.
Why the message can remain after refilling
Samsung says the alert clears during the next cycle after the compartment is filled. The detergent message clears during the wash portion, while the softener message clears during the rinse portion. A light that remains before that phase has occurred is not yet evidence of a sensor fault.
Refill, drawer closure, and no dispensing
| Observation | Likely next question |
|---|---|
| Refill message | Is the named auto tank correctly filled? |
| SDC or 5DC | Is the detergent drawer fully closed on the supported model? |
| Product remains after the cycle | Is there residue, a setting issue, or a dispenser-flow problem? |
When the alert becomes abnormal
If the correct compartment is above its minimum level and the message remains after the relevant wash or rinse phase, document the model, selected auto-dose setting, and product used. Clean only removable parts described in the manual. Do not probe the level sensor, force the pump, or pour water into the electronics area; request Samsung support for a repeat alert.
Refill and dispensing are two different questions
A refill message tells the user about supply in the supported auto-dispenser reservoir. It does not by itself prove that detergent failed to reach the wash. First identify whether the display names detergent, softener, or both, then fill only the matching compartment with a compatible product.
The message may not clear at the instant liquid is poured in; the model may update after the reservoir is recognized or a control action described in its manual. Avoid overfilling, mixing detergent with softener, or adding water unless Samsung directs it. If the reservoir is recognized but loads receive no product, investigate dispensing as a separate symptom.
