PF on a supported Whirlpool front-load washer means the appliance experienced a power failure while it was operating. It records an interrupted cycle; it does not identify a failed pump, motor, or control board by itself.
Choose resume or a fresh start by model
Whirlpool says some models let you press Start to complete the interrupted cycle. Other models require Cancel, followed by starting the wash again from the beginning. Use the owner’s manual for the control layout in front of you rather than holding a guessed combination.
Before restarting, check the load. If the washer stopped with detergent already mixed into wet fabric, do not automatically add another full dose.
Look at the house power event
- If lights in the home also went out, PF is consistent with the outage.
- If only the washer lost power, confirm the plug is fully seated and the dedicated breaker has not tripped.
- Do not use an extension cord, power strip, or loose adapter.
- If the breaker trips again, leave it off and have the circuit and appliance evaluated.
What one PF does not prove
A single PF after a known outage does not prove the main control needs replacement. Repeated PF messages with stable household power are different: note whether they occur during fill, heating, tumbling, or spin, and whether the display goes completely dark.
Protect the safety boundary
Do not remove the washer panel to tighten internal power connections or test voltage. If the cord, outlet, or plug is hot, discolored, or damaged, stop using the washer and contact a qualified electrician or service provider. A power cycle may restart electronics, but it cannot repair an unstable electrical supply.
Check the power event before restarting laundry
PF points to an interruption, not automatically to a failed control. Ask whether the home lost power, a plug was disturbed, or a breaker opened during the cycle. If a breaker trips again, stop using the washer; repeatedly resetting it can hide an electrical problem that needs evaluation.
After stable power is restored, follow the model’s displayed choices for continuing or starting over. Do not describe this as a universal factory reset, and do not assume the previous wash step completed. If water remains, use the documented drain or cancel option rather than forcing the door.
