Whirlpool F5 E4 on a supported front-load washer means three consecutive cycles were run without the door being opened. The washer may beep when Start is pressed. Open and close the door, then start the intended cycle again.
Why the washer checks for door use
The control expects the door to open between loads. If it records repeated cycles without that event, F5 E4 prevents another start until the door switch registers an open-and-close sequence. This does not automatically mean the latch motor is broken.

Clear the condition once
- Wait until the drum has stopped and the lock releases.
- Open the door fully.

If the manufacturer procedure does not clear the code, Whirlpool also documents a five-minute power interruption for the control. Treat that as a documented control restart, not a repair for damaged hardware.
Evidence of a switch or latch problem
The stronger hardware clues are a door that will not close squarely, a loose or cracked strike, repeated F5 E4 after a verified open-close action, or no change in the door indication. Do not push a tool into the latch opening or hold the switch closed by hand.
Service boundary
Request service if the correct door movement and one documented power cycle do not restore operation. The switch circuit, lock assembly, wiring, and control are behind protective panels. Never bypass the interlock or operate the washer with the door unsecured.
If opening the door does not clear the condition
Open and close the door normally, confirm that no garment is caught at the latch area, and then select the next cycle as the model instructions allow. Do not slam the door or insert a tool into the latch. The code is documented as a repeated-cycle door-use condition, so an ordinary door-open event should be part of the recovery.
If the control still does not register the door after visible obstructions are removed, the remaining latch, switch, harness, and control diagnosis is not a live DIY test. Record whether the door physically closes and whether another code appears for qualified service.
